Laura and I just read this right now. We're both in tears for you, and we can't even begin to imagine what you're going through...
I'm going to try and call you later on, okay... I know you're probably not reading this right now, but if you need absolutely anything AT ALL, or if there's anything I can do for you in Lafayette, call me. If you need my cell phone #, drop me a quick line over at Hotmail.
We are so, so sorry for this, and we're just sick about it.
I will get ahold of you as soon as I can.
Fuck. I don't have the words, my dear friend, I simply don't have the words.....
In memory of those who have fallen, words from another war:
"We have shared the incommunicable experience of war; we have felt, we still feel, the passion of life to its top. In our youths, our hearts were touched with fire." ---Oliver Wendell Holmes
"Who knows but it may be given to us, after this life, to meet again in the old quarters, to play chess and draughts, to get up soon to answer the morning roll call, to fall in at the tap of the drum for drill and dress parade, and again to hastily don our war gear while the monotonous patter of the long roll summons to battle?"
"Who knows but again the old flags, ragged and torn, snapping in the wind, may face each other and flutter, pursuing and pursued, while the cries of victory fill a summer day?"
"And after the battle, then the slain and wounded will arise, and all will meet together under the two flags, all sound and well, and there will be talking and laughter and cheers, and all will say: Did it not seem real? Was it not as in the old days?"
I'm so sorry to hear of your brother Andy's death. I hope something good eventually comes as a small consolation for your family and those of others who have died in this senseless exercise.
