From 1966: Hair-Hoppin' Glamour!

1966

Let me tell you, it takes a lot of effort and dedication to get a hairdo this high.  If that isn't the very epitome of La Glamour, I don't know what is.

Dream Lovers: Frank and Mia, 1966

On July 19, 1966, Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow were married at The Sands in
Las Vegas.
The bride was 21.  The groom was 50.  Despite the age difference, they were mad about each other.

His nickname for her was "Doll Face."  She called him "Charlie Brown."

"I don't know, maybe we'll only have a couple of years together. She's so young. But we have to try."  -Frank to daughter Nancy on the day of the wedding.
Frank and Mia's marriage lasted just two years, but they remained close friends until his death.  Mia was said to be devastated when he died, and she has remained very good friends with the Sinatra children over the years, Nancy in particular.   Mia refused any sort of cash settlement from Frank when they divorced.  When Woody Allen wronged Mia with Soon-Yi Previn, Frank reportedly offered to have Woody "taken care of."  Mia was touched by the gesture...it was classic Frank, her one and only Charlie Brown...but she refused.

From 1966: A Very Bloody Summer

Charles Whitman killed 14 people and wounded 32 others during a shooting rampage on and around the university's campus on August 1, 1966.  He had earlier that morning stabbed to death his wife and mother, making the total he killed 16 and 49 victims.

This is horrifying raw footage of Whitman shooting from the University of Texas clock tower.  What never ceases to amaze me is the bravery of those students who ran out, without any cover, to help rescue victims, risking being shot by Whitman themselves.  At least one of these heroes had recently returned to the United States from a tour of duty in Vietnam.

There are Austin residents who sought shelter behind their cars as Whitman turned his arsenal toward "The Drag," a popular shopping district, and killed several people at random there, people who were certainly unaware of what was transpiring on campus.  Whitman was such an expert shot, he managed to kill at least two victims as they peered out from the safety of their cars.

Richard Speck tortured, raped, and murdered eight student nurses from South Chicago Community Hospital on July 14, 1966.  After breaking into their apartment, Speck herded the terrified women into one bedroom and tied them up.  One by one, he took them from the room.  Only one woman managed to survive the massacre by hiding under the bed and out of sight.

I have an almost encyclopedic knowledge of this massacre, but I can't bring myself to write anything more about it.  Born to raise hell.

Bang Bang, My Baby Shot Me Down

I've been obsessed with this song ever since I heard it the other night as Ken and I watched Kill Bill Vol. 1. It's the tune you hear during the opening credits.

I think this clip is from 1966, when Nancy Sinatra appeared on a television special starring her father, called A Man And His Music, Part II.

And I prefer Nancy's interpretation of the song over Cher's.

From 1975: New York Mining Disaster, 1941

At 9:15am, on Friday, October 21st, 1966, the small Welsh community of Aberfan changed forever when a waste tip slid down a mountainside into the mining village. Miners were trapped underneath the sludge; the mud and waste literally engulfed the local elementary school.

144 people died in the Aberfan disaster: 116 of them were school children.

The events inspired the Bee Gees to write their first American hit, which they based upon the tragedy.

"Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?
Do you know what it's like on the outside?

Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide

Mr. Jones.
"

More about the song.

I love this charming, feminine, slightly suggestive ad. So very French! I want to get some prints of his work and hang them throughout our house.

From 1966: Jennifer Juniper, Just Because

Jenny Boyd in "Double D" Foale and Tuffin minidress
1966

Fashion designers Foale and Tuffin, famous for churning out minidresses and other mod delights for the dolly rockers of the day, loved having Jenny Boyd model their creations. They worked with her more than any other model, and Jenny was unofficially "the face" of Foale and Tuffin clothing.

From 1966: Because "Vos Yeux Attendent d'Elizabeth Arden" Means "Behold, The Three-Headed Dame Behind The Red Door," Au Francais

L'officiel Magazine
1966

I like the Elizabeth Arden salon down on Camelback Road here in Phoenix. It is charmingly retro, as if you are stepping back in time to the days where women spent their days at "the beauty parlor," getting primped and primed and ready for another week of housewifery. It was a cherished, sacred date that was viewed as absolutely necessary by those women who could scrimp enough out of their budgets to afford it. There was also a more clinical feel to the whole operation. Even the "beauty operators" wore white lab-ish coats. A good example of this is the episode of I Love Lucy where Lucy is trying to get Ricky to "let" her try an Italian haircut.

I've had my nails done at Elizabeth Arden before, and I have also had a facial or two. Ten years ago, I used to go there to have my hair cut. As I said, it is charmingly retro, and I enjoy retro enough to overlook their prices, which are criminally high.

Unfortunately, what I find charming, others may find stolid, staid, and just plain old-fashioned. I may be able to justify the prices and the lack of what have become normal, ordinary spa procedures (like aromatherapy or cornmeal scrubs) by pretending that it's 1955, and I am spending the morning at the beauty parlor before having a three-martini lunch at The Colony with the girls before going to an afternoon trunk show at Bonwit Teller, but other potential patrons may not be as mentally ill as I am.

Chanel No. 22: The Perfume Of Romance

1966

Here is a wonderful description of Chanel No, 22, which can only be purchased in Chanel boutiques and Bergdorf Goodman.

And while I am a Cristalle kind of a gal (the eau de toilette, if you please, which is its original incarnation and far superior to the cloying eau de parfum version), just this gorgeous ad alone makes me want to spit-shine my Payless Shoe Source pumps and march into a Chanel boutique for a bottle.

Gorgeous Claudia Schiffer was the face of my favorite Chanel fragrance back in the 90s.

Ye Olde Whopper Ad With Ye Olde Burger King Restaurant Illustration, 1966

Nicked from Found In Mom's Basement, which is my favorite site on the Information Superhighway for retro goodies.

Is it just that I am hungry, or does that hamburger look incredibly delicious?  Let's all get in my time traveling machine and head back to 1966!  Nowadays, it's a good Whopper if a condom isn't included in the condiments.
