What This Blog Needs: The Magic Of Soup

I love soup.  I could live quite happily on the stuff.

Growing up on a tight budget in Indiana, we ate a lot of Campbell's soup.  Bean With Bacon and Tomato were the favorites in our house.   Our thermoses were often filled with Beef Barley soup for schooltime lunches.  And if you were sick, Mom made our sickroom a little more special with Chicken And Stars.

Today, as an adult, one of the ultimate comfort foods for me is Campbell's Tomato made with full-fat half-and-half.

What This (And Every) Blog Needs: More Campbell's Soup

1959

If there's anything I like more than morbidly obese animated children extolling the virtues of My Canned Childhood (we ate a lot of Campbell's in my house growing up), it's using wink-wink nudge-nudge stereotypes about Scottish people to sell soup. "It's thrifty, too...aye, you can add seven or eight cans of water to that soup to make it stretch farther!"

Have you had your soup today?

From 1956: Blech.

I'm sick...some sort of overenthusiastic bug is chewing on my innards. Ever feel like you were accidentally shoved in front of a milk truck and it ran over you five times? Yeah. That's how I feel.

And Benadryl, any incarnation of it, should be sold on the street. I took some for the watery eyes and snuffly nose aspect of this flu and I woke up 18 hours later!

So I thought I would appease The Cold And Flu Gods by creating a post about vintage soup advertising, and this is what I found. Just what you want to look at when you are sick...pea soup the color of vomit. And to think, this is the best the graphic artists of the day could do with the color! What did this soup really look like? Sheesh.

A Full Soup Shelf Can Only Be Attained By Buying Campbell's, So Forget About That "Field Trip" To IKEA (No, You Don't Need Those Meatballs)

I am a great lover of Campbell's Tomato soup. I like to make it with fat-free half-and-half, so it is rich and creamy. Other than that, I find Campbell's soups much too salty.

Although...for some odd reason, I am now getting an urge to stick browned chicken thighs in a casserole dish with sliced mushrooms, slather 'em with Cream Of Celery, and stick the whole gloppy mess in a 375-degree oven.

This is a fabulous double-clicker.

From 1946: A Variation On The Old Adage About Cooks, Kitchens, Ladies, Parlors, Whores, And Bedrooms

I just noticed that this is one LOUSY double-clicker. Sorry about that...you know I tend to only favor ads where you can double-click them to see them in all of their glory. I'll let this one stay, but I will be more vigilant in the future.
