November 23rd, 1979...On ABC

Nothing warms the jaded cockles of my heart like a fresh big ole' mess of commercials from 1979.  It's like God heard my prayer, (no, not the one where The Almighty starts bestowing upon me an unlimited supply of Xanax-infused Magnum ice cream bars, the other prayer) and He had me find His bountiful, um, bounty on YouTube just now.
These commercials aired on ABC on November 23rd, 1979.

1. Contac
2. Mystique Books
3. Maybelline Eye Color Styling Pencils
4. Tostitos
5. Promo for "The Ropers", "Detective School", "The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island"
6. ABC Station ID
7. TV Spot for "10"
8. Chimere
9. Promo for "When She Was Bad"
10. "Playboy's Roller Disco & Pajama Party" Commercial Bumper
11. Promo for "Mork & Mindy"
12. Eyewitness News Update
13. Amoco
14. Promo for "Ski Scene"
15. KSTP Station ID
16. One A Day Plus Iron
17. Signal
18. Promo for "Eight Is Enough", "Charlie's Angels" and "Vega$"
19. Hefty
20. Ruffles
21. Pepsi
22. Mazda RX-7
23. "Playboy's Roller Disco & Pajama Party" End Credits

I must have done something to please Our Lord.  Oh, I know what it must have been: I didn't steal 23 packets of chopsticks at the conveyor belt sushi joint yesterday like I usually do.  Thanks, Santa Jesus!

"When She Was Bad" = "When Television Movies Had Cheryl Ladd and Robert Urich In Them, And Life Was Great"

Dorothy Stratten was featured heavily in the Playboy show, both roller-skating in a bikini and dancing in modest lingerie with The Village People (ironically, to a song called, "Are You Ready For The Eighties?"). You don't see her in this clip, but it's easy to find on YouTube.

All kidding aside...I know Dorothy was a gift from God.
It hurts to look at her, knowing that her happiness on earth would be so brief.

For Everyone Who Is Sick

It seems like everyone is sick during these Ides of March.

I'm including myself in those ranks: Ken brought home a terrible cough over a week ago, and while he seems to be over the worst of it, it remains with me.

Yes, it seems that we all need some Teek with TC-44
around here:

"No narcotics."  They say that like it's a good thing.  And this is from the 60s, no less.  I thought there was narcotic goodness in chewing gum back then.

From 1975: A Huge Chunk O' Commercial Goodness

November 10, 1975
Recorded during a Monday Night Football broadcast.
(The Chiefs beat the Cowboys, 34-31.)

Be sure to catch the very brief but gorgeous shot of a United Airlines DC-10.  And there are ads for Schlitz (the official beer of A Touch of Tuesday Weld...did you know that?  No?  Well, it is.) and the Boeing 747 (oh, yes, in the 70s and even into the 80s, the 747 was flown domestically in the United States, especially on TWA.  "Got on board a westbound 747").

There's also a promo for a brand-new ABC program called Good Morning, America, with host David Hartman.

Vintage Breakfast: Snap! Crackle! Pop!

I can't find an exact date for this darling commercial,
but it's a real favorite of mine.

The Rolling Stones got into the Rice Krispies game with this jingle that Brian Jones wrote with the J. Walter Thompson ad agency in 1964.  It aired on the BBC's Juke Box Jury.

The Monkees did a number of commercials for Kellogg's Rice Krispies, featuring their own version of the "K-E-Double L, O-Double Good...Kellogg's best to you!" tagline, with Micky on lead vocal.
This is one of my favorites because it features the Monkeemobile.

From 1974: The Geezer Edition

I'm back.  These days, I'm not blogging as often as I was, but I'm still around.  Thanks to those of you who dropped me a line and asked where I was.  Would you believe me if I told that I was in jail?

You would?

Okay, then.

From August 8, 1974, and the broadcast of NBC Nightly News, and the coverage of "the ordeal of President Nixon."  Take five minutes for yourself, and take things back to Watergate.  The pants were plaid, the news viewers were old and crotchety and opinionated, and the country was going to hell in a handcart being driven by a bunch of rich white men.  Everything old is new again, I guess.  Except for maybe the plaid pants.

If It's Friday, That Must Mean That I Am Having Meds-Related Hallucinations Where, In My Mind, It's 1981

The only thing that can be said about this tune: Fuck yeah!

This tune is off a brilliant album called Worlds Apart. Yes, I own it, and it rocks. It rocks so very, very hard.

Saga is from Canada, the land of other such brilliant bands as Rush and Loverboy.

This tune peaked at #26 on the Billboard pop chart in March 1983. (Is it just me, but was the fall of 1982 to the summer of 1983 a particularly splendid time for music?)

Now, pardon me. I have to shove a wad of Chewels in my mouth in defiance as my Dad banishes me from the dinner table yet again for declaring that Ronald Reagan Is The Biggest Disaster To Have Ever Befallen This Country.

(p.s. I miss you, Dad.)

Unpleasant

I'm having a combination endoscopy/colonoscopy tomorrow morning.

Just one of the many joys of turning 40, I guess (dripping with sarcasm).

Right now, I am doing the Miralax regimen with white grape juice. It's as much as fun as it sounds.

However, I am always thinking of the scads of ragamuffins who read this blog, so have a couple of vintage commercials pertaining to laxatives.

Lazy Blogging: Have A Commercial Block From 1983

I've started a new job recently, and while I don't want that to cut into my blogging time too much, I *am* a little more tired than usual in the evenings.

I'll get back into the spirit of things shortly. Until then, have a hunk-a-chunk o' commercial goodness from WPIX in New York,
November 17, 1983.

Be sure to keep an eye out for Estelle Costanza.

From 1982: Show Me That Smile

This commercial aired on Tuesday, April 27, 1982.

Notice anything about the two young actors playing The Kids?

That's Kirk Cameron and Tracey Gold, roughly three years before they were cast as siblings on Growing Pains!

From 1979: This, I Do For Me

Well, it's springtime, and that means a couple of things.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are already gearing up for another dismal season,
Ken's allergies are driving him nuts,
and I am monkeying with my hair color.

I haven't seen my natural hair color since the summer of 1987, when I used Clorox to bleach my dark brown hair an unholy blonde.

I'm a big believer in hair color changes, especially when you are a woman who has been married for a while. It's good to keep a husband guessing, I think ;-)

From 1984: Thank Goodness For Chef Boyardee

The ultimate in canned comfort food, in my opinion. I love the ravioli so much. The taste takes me right back to my childhood, finding this in my official Roy and Johnny thermos from my Emergency! lunch box.
